Laird Ships Direct DV Recorder

FireWire device functions as VTR and external hard drive By Dave Nagel
Laird Telemedia has begun shipping its new capdiv" Direct DV Recorder. The capdiv is a standalone device for capturing DV footage and can also function as an external hard drive for use with NLE's like Apple's FInal Cut Pro and Avid's Xpress DV. It's available now with support for Macintosh and Windows systems.

The capdiv recorder is a portable device measuring 1.75" x 4.125" x 5.562" and includes a six-hour rechargeable battery. Available in 3.3-hour and 4.5-hour capacities, the device can function as both a VTR and a hard disk drive. In hard drive mode, it captures and converts DV footage to an extended AVI format that can be recognized by NLEs for editing directly from the drive without digitization. It includes front-panel controls for VTR operation and can also accept start and stop record commands from a DV camcorder.

The capdiv Direct DV Recorder is available now in two configurations (3.3 hour and 4.5 hour) for $1,295 and $1,595. It includes a FireWire connection for compatibility with Macintosh and Windows systems and can also be operated as a standalone capture device. For more information, visit
