LA-area freeway torched by tanker truck now openLA-area freeway now open 3 days after tanker truck fire torches overpass
LOS ANGELES (AP) ' Authorities say all lanes of a vital Southern California freeway are now open, three days after a shutdown was forced by a huge tanker truck fire that left an overpass badly damaged.
Caltrans said in a statement Saturday that repairs were finished and the 10-mile stretch of the Pomona Freeway linking Los Angeles to its eastern suburbs was open.
The reopening brings an end to three grueling days of traffic for commuters and around-the-clock labor for highway crews.
Wednesday's tanker truck inferno torched an overpass on the freeway in Montebello. Caltrans had to tear down half the bridge and carefully dismantle parts of the other side after asbestos and phone lines were discovered inside.
