KromA Takes Wing with Modest Mouse
The video is a kind of modern fable about a boy who finds a wounded crow (with a bird’s body and Brock’s face) and attempts to nurse it back to health. The crow dies, but is reborn as Brock and his band mates.
KromA created a number of photo-real visual effects for the scene, including a CG version of Brock as the crow for the scene where the bird falls from the sky. Artists also added additional CG crows to that and other shots.
Many scenes in the clip involved compositing Brock into background scenes and making adjustments to either his size or the scale of the surrounding environment to make him appear to be the size of a crow. “In some scenes, Isaac is lying in a shoebox that the boy is carrying home,” recalled KromA visual effects supervisor Bert Yukich. “To make the proportions look right, we either altered the size of the box or affected the box’ environment. For one close-up, we adjusted the scale of plants visible behind the box and tracked those elements to the camera movement.”
Yukich also created a reveal that appears at the end of the video where the members of Modest Mouse are “reborn” and rise up out of a farm field. To give the sequence the proper supernatural look, Yukich applied textures, derived pictures of water clouds, over the images of the musicians.
Amy Yukich was executive producer for KromA.
