KromA Makes Fashion Statement with BarbieCreates VFX for a new spot featuring Hilary Duff and her sister, Haylie (February 18, 2005)
KromA created visual effects for a new spot for Barbie featuring teen actress and pop star Hilary Duff and her sister, Haylie. The Duff sisters appear in posters hanging on a bedroom wall behind two girls who rave over new Fashion Fever Barbie. When the girls leave the room, Hilary and Haylie spring to life, reaching out from their spot on the wall to inspect the new doll and add their stamp of approval. When the girls return, Hilary and Haylie become two dimensional again, although they are now in different poses.
The effects sequences were created by compositing images of the Duff sisters onto CG posters and then into the background scene. ?The parts of the girls that pop out of the poster had to be rotoscoped, explained KromA visual effects supervisor Bert Yukich. ?We then added a drop shadow to create the illusion of 3D.
KromA used light and shadow effects to make the CG posters appear to be a natural part of the background environment and created another lighting effect to signal the girls magical transformation from posters to 3D. The 3D elements were created via SoftImage XSI. Compositing and final post were accomplished on an Avid Nitris DS.
Amy Yukich was executive producer for KromA.
