Kodak To Nab Encad

Wide-format printer maker to become Kodak subsidiary in 2002 By Dave Nagel
Kodak plans to expand further into the wide-format printing business. The company announced today plans to acquire Encad, a manufacturer of wide-format inkjet printers and supplies, in early 2002. Kodak says the deal will make the company one of the top-3 sellers of inkjet products.

Right now, wide-format printing, including printers and supplies, is a $2.4 billion market. Kodak says this is growing at a 15 percent rate annually and expects its wide-format division to start contributing profit by 2003. Kodak's product offerings will include printers, media, inks and software.

Kodak introduced its own wide-format printer a couple months ago, though shipments in the United States will not begin until 2002. The printer is the Kodak Professional 5260 Inkjet Printer, the first in a new line of high-speed, wide-format inkjet printers. It uses piezo inkjet print head technology, six colors and Dynamic Contone printing.

The acquisition will cost Kodak $25 million. It is still pending regulatory and Encad shareholder approval.
