Kodak Launches Mac Digital GEMPhotoshop plugin reduces dust and scratches
Digital GEM allows users to control noise and grain in highlight and shadow areas and is designed to maintain detail while eliminating noise, including film grain, JPEG artifacts, line screen patterns, etc. It can also be used to create effects like unsharp mask, sharpening and soft focus. Digital GEM can operate automatically or can be controlled by the user with three separate sliders that provide manual control over shadow and highlight areas and overall image clarity.
Kodak also says the new release offers several improvements over the previous Windows-only version, including better memory handling and increased speed. (A new 1.1 version for Windows that incorporates these changes is also available.)
Digital GEM is one of three technologies for image correction acquired by Kodak from Applied Science Fiction. The other two are Digital ROC, designed for color correction and restoration, and Digital SHO, designed to reveal hidden details in dark image areas. All are now available as plugins for Mac OS 9, Mac OS X and Windows. Digital GEM sells for $79.95. Digital ROC and Digital SHO sell for $49.95 each. Trial versions are also available.
