Keio University Deploys 500 Seats of Solid Edge(September 13, 2001)
The University of Keio, where many of Japan's distinguished engineers have emerged, plans to use Solid Edge in mechanical engineering classes and for design and manufacturing information technology research studies within the Department of System Design Engineering, at the School of Science and Technology.
Undergraduate students started using Solid Edge in May for mechanical design and drafting. Solid Edge is now installed for lessons in mechanical design and drafting in the department. About 150 sophomore students in the department received drafting and 3D solid modeling lessons for 15 weeks, as part of their design literacy curriculum. Lessons begin with the fundamental operations of Solid Edge, the creation of 3D models and related drawings. Despite the large quantity of models and drawings to be produced, all of the students were able to finish the assignments within a short period of time.
"We know that Solid Edge has excellent 2D drafting. Initially we started lessons using our existing 2D CAD system and later we used Solid Edge, which was installed after the course had started. Even though both subjects taught the same content, the 2D CAD lessons needed 15 hours for content completion, while Solid Edge's 3D CAD lessons required just five hours to complete," says Dr. Hideki Aoyama, associate professor in the Department of System Design Engineering.
Keio University is planning to install Solid Edge throughout the wide range of their research laboratories in addition to Dr.Aoyama's laboratory.
"We have been receiving many requests to install Solid Edge from other offices in the university," says Dr. Aoyama. "In my research laboratory, we are studying different areas of design with CAD, such as for industrial design and intelligent manufacturing systems that consider cutting resistance. In the area of industrial design, a system to create exact models by using expressions of artistic sensitivity, not currently used by today's engineering systems, is needed. For example, we are developing a system to create precise 3D engineering shapes from vague design outlines which are hard to define by numerical expressions alone."
The laboratory is also researching a system to assist in capturing an industrial designer's creative thought process and ideas and how Solid Edge can be applied to that effort. In the near future, Keio University believes that technology from UGS combined and integrated with technology from the School of Science and Technology at Keio University will be able to play a significant role in the development of Japanese industry. "As graduates move into the business world, they intend to continue to develop such research collaboratively with industrial companies," says Dr. Aoyama.
