Judge considers trying Florida couple separatelyFlorida judge considers trying couple accused of killing adoptive daughter separately
MIAMI (AP) ' A Miami-Dade judge is set to decide whether a South Florida couple accused of killing their adoptive daughter will be tried together or separately.
A courts spokeswoman says Judge Sarah Zabel is scheduled to announce her ruling Wednesday. During a hearing Tuesday, defense attorneys requested that Jorge and Carmen Barahona be tried separately. The guardian who represents the interests of the children expressed opposition to separate trials. Prosecutors requested the decision be deferred to a later date.
Authorities say the Barahonas tortured their 10-year-old twins, Nubia and Victor, at their Miami home. Nubia's body was found in her father's truck along Interstate 95 in February. Her twin brother was badly burned by a toxic chemical.
The Barahonas have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and child abuse charges.
