Other announcements from the keynote of interest to audio users included a new 17-inch PowerBook, a 12-inch PowerBook and FireWire 800, the next-generation FireWire standard. It offers 800 Mbps transfers, up from 400 Mbps in previous version of FireWire.
Among the benefits of Pro Tools 6.0 on OS X is the ability to use dual processor machines for faster performance. Also, Pro Tools 6 takes advantage of OS X's CoreAudio and CoreMIDI features, enabling better performance and fewer configuration hassles for users. For example, a CoreAudio application makes it unecessary for users to wrestle with multiple audio protocols such as ASIO, EASI, Direct IO, OMS, VST and RTAS. The streamlined approach gets data in and out of the computer more efficiently. Plus, CoreAudio and CoreMIDI software automatically recognize audio and MIDI sequencing hardware devices.
Pro Tools 6 has a host of new features, including:
Pro Tools 6.0 supports the following systems: Pro Tools TDM (Pro Tools|HD, Pro Tools|24 MIX, Pro Tools|24) and Pro Tools LE (Digi 001, Audiomedia III & ToolBox) with support for Mbox and Digi 002 to follow. Windows XP support of the new features in Pro Tools 6, and OSX compatibility with AVoption|XL, Unity, and MediaManager are scheduled for Q2, 2003.
