Jibe Networks Technology Delivers DVD-Quality Video Over the Internet

(September 20, 2001)
Jibe Networks, Inc. has announced the availability of core enabling technology to deliver full screen DVD-quality video and other high-bandwidth content over the Internet.

The firm uses its own proprietary routing and network mapping algorithms, coupled with a strategy of managing the time-shifted delivery of content to allow Internet content providers, advertisers, TV and film producers, educational institutions, corporations and others to profitably monetized their digital assets.

Unlike other firms that have announced related offerings, Jibe is the first company to make its technology publicly available. Jibe is currently deploying the technology with selected Beta partners. The public can experience a beta of this technology firsthand, and use it to subscribe to precasts of content from participating partner sites through Jibe Networks' main web site,

Jibe's content precasting solution is entirely web-based and integrates tightly with existing web standards. This gives content providers complete freedom in implementing the technology within their existing systems and distribution models including centralized server farms and distributed carrier edge servers.

Because Jibe's solution is designed to be fully integrated with the web, content providers can also continue to establish and maintain their own unique brand or presence on the Internet. "They do not have to co-exist in some pre-ordained line-up or adhere to someone else's concept of an appropriate navigational schema or GUI. They are free to pursue their own vision of how best to communicate with their audiences," added Decasper.

The cornerstone of Jibe's solution is the concept of securely precasting content directly to the hard drives of user PCs, in a manner which can reach tens of millions of viewers, without adversely impacting network or server infrastructure. Precasting of content is initiated by content providers when they "publish" a new media file; the published file will automatically be downloaded onto viewers' hard drives based upon preferences that have been specified by the viewers.

Precasting and off-hours downloading of content is perfect for content providers that wish to offer Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) content. Jibe's technology has been engineered to provide guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS) for playback, overcoming the poor quality playback normally associated with streaming technologies. Jibe has also focused attention on ensuring the security of the content it delivers. The technology is compliant with industry standard Digital Rights Management (DRM) solutions, plus it provides an additional second layer of encryption to the content that is stored on the user's hard drive.

While Jibe has chosen to introduce its technology within the PC environment, the company has engineered its technology to be applicable to next generation game platforms which will have Internet connectivity and large hard disks. Jibe will also make its technology compatible with digital Programmable Video Recorders (PVR) and next generation set-top boxes as those platforms become more widely available.

Jibe's technology dynamically creates a global content routing overlay network, which manages existing infrastructure and resources within the Internet to automatically deliver content from the original server all the way to the user's machine. Jibe Network's approach is based on four important techniques:

  • Load-balancing servers by coordinating client accesses. This applies to both centralized servers (farm) as well as a
    distributed carrier edge infrastructure.
  • Delivering DVD-quality video all the way to the user's
premises and storing it on the unused part of a local disk
while the network links are idle.

  • Optionally replicate content proactively among end systems.
  • Be agnostic with respect to content and platforms, and
integrate fully with all common web browsers and media players.
