Janitor convicted of murdering NJ priest in 2009Janitor convicted of fatally stabbing NJ priest in 2009; defended argued sexual blackmail
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ' A former janitor has been convicted of murder in the fatal stabbing of a New Jersey priest in 2009.
Jose Feliciano didn't deny stabbing the Rev. Edward Hinds to death in the rectory of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Chatham in northern New Jersey.
But the lawyer for the Easton, Pa., resident told jurors in closing arguments Monday that Feliciano was being sexually blackmailed and killed Hinds in a fit of rage.
The prosecution said the janitor "slaughtered" the priest after Hinds fired him. Prosecutors said the priest had discovered Feliciano had an outstanding arrest warrant in Philadelphia from the 1980s for sexually touching a child.
Feliciano argued the priest demanded sex to keep quiet about the warrant.
The jury reached its verdict Thursday in Morristown.
