Iomega Ships 750 MB Zip

USB 2.0 model available now; FireWire version on the way By Dave Nagel
Iomega has started shipping its new Zip 750MB drive. The new third-generation model is based on USB 2.0. The company says a FireWire model will be available in the fall.

With the USB 2.0 interface, the Zip 750 transfers at 7.5 MB per second (maximum). The drive is backward compatible with Zip 250 disks (read and write) and Zip 100 disks (read only) and supports Mac and Windows. The new 750 disks offer password protection in te firmware and disk serialization. The drives also ship with two Iomega software utilities--Automatic Backup and Iomega Sync.

According to Iomega, the company has sold 48 million Zip drives since 1995 and more than 300 million disks. The new Iomega Zip 750 MB USB 2.0 drive is now available for $179.95. The upcoming Zip 750 MB FireWire drive will debut in September and will cost $199.95. An internal ATAPI version will also be available this fall for $149.95.
