Interplay and MacPlay Develop Giants: Citizen Kabuto Exclusively for OS X. But Who Benefits?

Not Legacy Users, and Perhaps Not the Developers or Publishers By Don Lee
Macintosh gaming development company MacPlay announced the release of Giants: Citizen Kabuto on October 30th which is the first Mac OS X only game release for Apple Computers new operating system. The Omni Group (the company that ported the Interplay title) is a development company that has specialized in developing programs for alternative platforms.

This announcement is major because this title was ported to take advantage of the new Mac OSs features, such as memory protection and preemptive multitasking. The decision to develop only for Mac OS X is a courageous one since the new operating system hasnt been fully embraced by the Mac community up until the recent release of OS 10.1 because of stability and performance issues.

The games release is facing an uphill battle right from the start with the Mac gaming marketshare in the single digits compared to their PC and console counterparts. In addition, many Mac gamers are still using OS 9.2 or earlier. I would find it a very tough sell to upgrade to an operating system just to play a new game.
