Infogrames Brings Competitive Simulation to Monopoly Tycoon

Players Construct Buildings and Business Empires While Out-Maneuvering (October 08, 2001)
The Monopoly game becomes the world's first competitive simulation PC game: Monopoly Tycoon, an interactive adventure in empire-building from Infogrames, Inc. that ships to most major retail stores this week. The Monopoly brand is licensed from Hasbro, Inc.

Players now compete for control of industries and city districts to build thriving business empires in real-time. Play allows would-be tycoons to build establishments, attract customers and generate the cash they need to outwit up to five other competitors in a living city that evolves from the 1930s to the present day. Players can choose to build up to 44 different businesses, ranging from restaurants, theaters, billiards halls, toy stores and others.

"Monopoly Tycoon blends many of the elements of the best-selling simulation and strategy title, RollerCoaster Tycoon, with the entrepreneurial spirit of the world's best-selling board game Monopoly," says Nancy MacIntyre, vice president of marketing for Infogrames' Beverly Label. "The sandbox genre of games represents over $630MM in lifetime sales. The Monopoly Tycoon game redefines this genre by introducing a competitive, multiplayer experience."

In another striking departure from the board game, players get to know the residents of their cities to plan the businesses and services they need to create vibrant, living cityscapes. Instead of simply moving tokens, participants live the game-playing experience by outbidding competitors at property auctions, masterminding advertising campaigns and checking up on their businesses any time of the day or night -- all while a 24-hour game clock ticks off in real-time.

"Of course, it's not all harmonious," explains MacIntyre. "You still have to watch out for the cut-throat scheming of other players determined to bankrupt you, business pitfalls and economic downturns."

A special feature of the Monopoly Tycoon game allows up to six players to play online simultaneously via a local-area network (LAN) or the Internet at

Developed by Deep Red Games LTD, the Monopoly Tycoon CD-ROM game has an ESRB rating of 'E' for Everyone and is currently available at most major retail outlets for an approximate retail price of $39.99.
