Independent View Turns the Camera Around For Unique "Behind-the-Scenes" Look at Independent Film

KQED San Francisco Presents New National Series Featuring Interviews With Familiar Celebrities, Including Robert Redford, Spike Lee and Tim Robbins, Along With Emerging Indie Film Talents (July 17, 2001)
Independent View comes to living rooms across America with an engaging lineup of independent film celebrities and emerging filmmakers. A production of KQED San Francisco, Independent View presents 17 revealing half-hour episodes, which will be distributed to public televisions nationwide via American Public Television (APT).

While the series premiere of Independent View draws on Americas increasing love of independent filmmaking and internationally known stars, producers and directors interviewed in New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco will be the centerpiece of the program.

The series offers audiences an exciting behind-the-scenes look into the creative process of independent filmmaking. Hosted by actress Alexis Lezin, and joined by correspondents B. Ruby Rich, Michael Fox, Erika Dalya Muhammad and Rubén Martinez, each episode of Independent View features interviews with both recognizable personalities and rising talents.

An innovative segment titled "At the Video Store", which wraps up each episode, offers viewers an informed review of the best indie films around as rated by the experts the video store clerks.

The premiere episode features Robert Redford actor, producer, director and champion of American independent film in a half-hour interview with national film critic B. Ruby Rich. Redford gives his candid opinions on the state of independent filmmaking today, the need for independent voices in media, and his involvement with the creation of the Sundance Institute?parent of the Sundance Film Festival.

"The San Francisco Bay Area is recognized internationally as one of the ground-breaking independent film centers" notes Lezin. "There are many voices and stories to be told about the world of independent filmmaking. I hope the series will foster an even greater appreciation for this cinematic art in other parts of America through public television."

Other guests of Independent View include Allison Anders, Darren Aronofsky, Miguel Arteta, Brenda Blethyn, Charles Burnett, Ken Burns, Joan Chen, Jem Cohen, Roger Ebert, Mike Figgis, Barry Gifford, Danny Glover, Mary Harron, Barbara Kopple, Laszlo Kovacs, Ang Lee, Spike Lee, Albert Maysles, Dan Minahan, Gregory Nava, Tim Robbins, Julian Schnabel, Susan Seidelman, Marc Singer, Lisanne Skyler, Cauleen Smith, Roger Guenveur Smith, Penelope Spheeris, Tilda Swinton, Christine Vachon, John Waters and Ruby Yang.

In addition to the television series, Independent View hosts a new, robust Web site?at featuring interview clips, transcripts, movie schedules, biographies and resources. The interactive "Youre the Critic" allows visitors to weigh in their opinions on independent films currently in release.

Funding for Independent View is provided by TomKat, the members of KQED and the KQED Campaign for the Future Program Venture Fund.
