Imaginary Forces completes dramatic teaser and main titles for "The Flight That Fought Back"

Award-winning design and entertainment agency Imaginary Forces (IF) recently completed the dramatic teaser and main titles for "The Flight That Fought Back," Discovery Channel's that chronicles the heroism of the 40 passengers on United Airlines Flight 93. The special will premiere Sunday, September 11, 2005, at 9 PM (ET/PT).

The film retells the plane's final moments as those on board fought to regain control of the aircraft and includes rarely heard voice recordings and the personal reflections of family and friends.

Imaginary Forces created the powerful main titles, which use actual transcripts of the calls that came in from passengers to family members and emergency personnel. The sequence opens on a visual representation of the phone transmissions, moving and reacting to the voices. As an aircraft comes closer and closer to the camera, the transmissions become more intense, interrupting the imagery of the plane. The sound design serves as the driving force of the sequence, building the suspense and gravity of the situation, and disrupting the footage of the approaching airliner.

"We wanted to take a minimalist approach with the titles," explains IF Creative Director Karin Fong. "We felt it would be more powerful and emotional to focus on the sounds and drama. By adding in the visual representation of the static, it appears as though the transmissions are fighting their way through the image of the plane."

In the teaser, Fong and the IF team again played on the real sound footage and bytes to propel the story. The piece highlights the 40 fallen heroes of Flight 93 who thwarted the terrorists' deadly plot. IF blended footage from the film with intimate glimpses through the plane's windows to give viewers the experience of being inside the aircraft.

"The idea to make the viewers privy to scenes that are contained within the space of the plane," concludes Fong, "and to concentrate on the drama of the incident as it is happening through the actual sounds and artifacts."
