IdN Turns 15

Design connects us all By Ko Maruyama
We are all connected.  International Design celebrates our diversity and the familiar threads that join us all together.  Every year I meet up with Laurence Ng to discuss the hottest sights at SIGGRAPH and catch up.  This year, the upcoming magazine's 15th Anniversary will a milestone for them.  To celebrate IdN is sponsoring a designer's contest.

I don't remember the first year that I met Laurence, Chris and a couple of helpers at the IdN booth (when the Los Angeles Siggraph had convention halls in the lower floors).  Usually I don't go to the convention to purchase magazines - but as I walked by, the beautiful package design let me know that this wasn't "just" some beautiful prints.

When I began talking with Laurence, it was obvious that his love for great design - motion graphics, film, drawings, traditional fine art pieces, photography, graffiti, all things visually interesting - was much greater than some other magazine publishers.  Other magazine publishers may have an appreciation for their work, but Laurence's passion shoots out of his skin like some kind of anime superhero.

Laurence's energy and enthusiasm translates to all of the people that work with him at the Siggraph booth, and is reflected in the creative IdN productions.

To celebrate the 15th year - IdN is inviting the entire design community to participate and share this energy.  With few creative constraints, IdN has set up some simple guidelines for their '15' contest.  Basically, produce a printable work (raster or vector) that expresses the theme '15'.  The winning piece will be published.

If you want to pre-order the magazines you can certainly do that through the website.  If you're an instructor or student - please contact me regarding academic/institutional pricing.  Perhaps I'll see you at the IdN booth at Siggraph 2007 in San Diego.
