INTERspectacular: From Revolution to EvolutionNew York-based design boutique celebrates 1st year in business with Comedy Central re-design (May 12, 2005)
INTERspectacular celebrates its 1st year in business by unveiling the evolution of Comedy Centrals re-design.
Co-Founders/Creative Directors Luis Blanco and Michael Uman launched INTERspectacular in Fall of 2003 with the awarding of Comedy Centrals original re-design project. Intended as a visual revolution from Comedy Centrals previous stylistic identity, INTERspectacular incorporated the work of pop and street art including icons, symbols and marks provided by underground artists such as Shepherd Fairey, best known for Obey/Giant and Studio Number One; Friends With You, designers and makers of plush urban toys; and Dr. Revolt, old school graffiti legend. INTERspectacular also worked closely with music house, Expansion Team to create all the original music and sound design.
In the Fall of 2004, Comedy Central once again called on INTERspectacular to develop and grow the new look. INTERspectacular turned to underground artists Shepherd Fairey; Nathan Jurevecius, the illustrator/toy designer known for the Scary Girl line of toys; Triston Eaton, illustrator/toy designer and owner of Thunderdog Studios; Dave Savage illustrator/designer; Superdeux, toy/graphic designer; and Filth/Lucas Irwin, print and toy designer. INTERspectacular also created new print identity elements for the network, including letterhead, envelopes and business cards.

Kendrick Reid, VP of On-Air for Comedy Central, Reid comments on his continuing relationship with INTERspectacular:
?Shortly after the launch of the redesign, Comedy Central became part of MTV Networks...and with that came a slightly new design direction. We needed to evolve the look of the network while keeping it fresh and contemporary. Many of the elements from the first round that INTERspectacular created were city-centric. The assignment was to expand upon that and play with it...essentially not make it so city-centric. Michael and Luis took that concept and really had a lot of fun with it. They integrated suburban and rural images and very Americana-type images into the new package. But they stayed true to their original philosophy, keeping it rooted in street art, graffiti and collage, and also made sure that some of the basic rules of design still applied."
INTERspectacular also marks its 1st anniversary with the announcement of a new alliance with global production company Curious Pictures, and the completion of several projects for Target and ad agency Mother/New York.

?We've known and admired the individual Creative Directors for years, so we were excited when we heard they had teamed up. We knew the results would be interesting, to say the least. We thought the Comedy Central re-design was AWESOME, so we jumped at the opportunity to work with them. One thing that impressed us about that project is the way they seamlessly wove in work from artists and designers from all over the world. So far we've worked on several Target Time Square projects. The agency and client has been thrilled with their work, as well as their ability to work with extremely tight schedules.
The environmental design projects displayed in Times Square were all scheduled to coincide with special events, including New Years Eve and Fashion Week. One of their projects received an internal award at Target.
Under Blanco and Uman's guidance, completing a successful first year in business has meant that INTERspectacular has provided motion graphics, print design, music and character development for a diverse group of clients in the television network, cable net and advertising arenas. In fact, the company was recently chosen to be profiled by Crains New York Business as an example of a 21st century company formed with a unique business model.
For year two, INTERspectacular is well poised to take on emerging arenas of design. An overall goal for the company is to continue collaborating with a wide range of clients and companies to create design for interactive and alternative media, including animated outdoor signage, the Internet, and mobile devices. ?Right now were basically a design and animation studio, which we love. But weve got our sights on other stuff as well. Putting our skills into original content, toys and non-traditional media outlets, for example. explains INTERspectacular Creative Director/Co-Founder Luis Blanco. ?The design leap to alternative and emerging media was not a difficult one. To us, its all design.
?But our approach is always carefully considered, adds Creative Director and fellow Co-Founder Michael Uman, ?What is the message? Where is it being seen and under what conditions? These are all factors that impact how the design is created and implemented. Our partnership with Curious Pictures is pivotal for our mission this year because they will be introducing us to their contacts in the advertising world, and also provide us with a production machine when we need it in our ongoing development of original characters and content.
New Yorks concept and design boutique INTERspectacular was formed in spring 2004 by Creative Directors Luis Blanco and Michael Uman. INTERspectacular Creative Director Michael Uman has created brand and image campaigns, show packages, commercials and web design. He was responsible for directing teams of designers and animators as principal and partner in the award winning FDG Design Studios. Previous to FDG, Uman maintained his own design studio, Umanoid Studios, where he collaborated with a wide variety of broadcast and commercial clients. Early in his career as an illustrator, Uman was heavily influenced by the leading graffiti and hip-hop artists of the 1980s. He participated in group art/graffiti shows, and completed design projects for Def Jam and Tommy Boy record labels. Uman is also an accomplished electronic musician who has released tracks on various compilations.
INTERspectacular Creative Director Luis Blanco has created branding campaigns, image campaigns and show packages in addition to his work as a commercial Director. Prior to launching INTERspectacular, Blanco held the position of Art Director at USA Network. At USA, Blanco directed a team of designers and animators helping to create and shape USAs brand identity. Previously, Blanco founded and was Creative Director of Chelsea Design where he worked with a diversity of broadcast and commercial clients.
INTERspectacular Executive Producer Greg Babiuk has worked in many facets of the film and television industry for over 20 years. He began his career shooting animation for interactive applications and later moved on to commercial post-production as a colorist and compositor. Combining these numerous skills, Babiuk moved into production as a director of visual effects and then producer. He has worked with some of the most prestigious commercial and entertainment companies in the country in his various capacities. He has worked on commercial campaigns for Coke, McDonalds and Boston Market and launched entertainment brands and produced show packages and promotions for ESPN, Discovery Health and VH1. For the past several years, Babiuk has focused his talents on development of cross-platform content and promotions.
