I dare the technology industry to disclose...
I recently bought a new pair of shoes and since I have a distinct distaste for the over-bloated gaudy Nikes et al I went for classic old-school sneakers. Indeed the shoes I bought were from the brand NoSweat; a company dedicated to manufacturing footwear that does not exploit workers in the worlds poorest countries.
NoSweat shoes are made in Indonesia under guaranteed 100 percent Unionized labour, where every worker is covered by health insurance, paid annual leave and a wage 20 percent higher than the local base wage plus a family rice bonus. But more than the ethical approach taken by NoSweat is their Labour Disclosure document included in every shoe box.
The document gives specific detail of the Labour entitlements of the workers that made the shoe, their wages and benefits in the specific context of the country they work.
It is a visionary document - so simple and so powerful. And whilst NoSweat issue the challenge to all other athletic show manufacturers to do the same; I would like to take the idea further....
