Humber College Installs Vicon Mocap System(December 11, 2001)
Humber College installed an 8-MCam camera Vicon system in a 4000 square foot capture space. The system will be accessible both to full-time college and continuing education students. Students in the Collegeıs gaming program will be expected to build animated game sequences using Alias|Wavefrontıs Maya or Discreetıs 3D Studio Max to build characters animated with Vicon motion capture data.
³We selected a Vicon system after exhaustively exploring competitive systems. We really liked Viconıs support of lightweight markers, the real-time capability and the fact that it is the most streamlined, efficient optical motion capture system available. The data is smooth and not choppy, and the software that drives the system is uncomplicated and reliable?which was an important consideration being that the main users will be students with relatively little experience,² explained William Hanna, Dean of the School of Media Studies, Humber College.
³The biggest excitement for us in incorporating motion capture into our pipeline is the ability to bypass tedious and time consuming key-framed character animation and the associated coding. Most of our students are creatives, focusing on character, images and scripts?with motion capture we save time and money since the students are able to animate long sequences much more efficiently,² Hanna continued.
Vicon 8 is the most advanced optical motion capture system available and allows actors to move freely, unrestricted by wires, awkward suits or large body markers. The system can capture multiple actors simultaneously, and with Vicon's million-pixel resolution MCam?, motion data is recorded at near perfect accuracy. Vicon 8 is the same professional motion capture solution that has been used in the production of leading game and feature film projects including, 'Gladiator', 'Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace', 'The Mummy', 'The Patriot', 'Titanic', and many others.
