Hula Post Production Takes on the Third Reich"Valkyrie" Enlists Hula Post to Supply Editorial Gear in U.S. and Germany (January 14, 2009)
Hula Post supplied three Avid Media Composer Adrenaline systems (on the Mac platforms with Avid Dnxcel hardware), a shared storage system, decks and other peripherals used by editor and composer John Ottman and his crew. Factory-certified technicians supervised the set up and take down of gear at each of three sites used by the editorial team including in Berlin, the production's location site for six months. Hula Post's crew was also responsible for transporting media files from Europe to the United States.
Ottman, whose previous collaborations with Singer include the acclaimed Superman Returns, prepared the offline cut of Valkyrie in Avid DNxHD 36 format. Using the compressed, HD media provided the editorial team with the advantage of working with high resolution imagery. It also allowed them to prepare previews for the director and other key production personnel from the Avid, without going through the additional step of an online conform. That avoided the time-consuming process of re-digitizing media and permitted changes to be incorporated into previews right up to the last moment.
Editing on location is never easy, but Hula Post made it much easier for Ottman and his crew to do their work through their careful management of all of the technical issues. "I was surprised," recalls Ottman. "I'm used to seeing the Hula guys in L.A., but then we showed up in Berlin and there they were.
"You operate under a lot of pressure when you edit a big film like this, and so there is a lot of comfort in knowing that if something goes wrong, they are there to fix it right away."
According to Dylan Firshein, Ottman's first assistant editor and associate editor on Valkyrie, Hula Post's expertise proved especially when it was time to leave town. "When we were ready to depart Germany, the Hula guys came back and packed up our stuff," Firshein recalls. "I kept my own back up copy of the edit just to be safe. If something bad had happened, I could have rebuilt the project. But it all came through fine. In fact, the system beat me to L.A. by a day."
