Anyone who's ever read my reviews on DMN knows I love books that are in the 'Learn by Doing' category and this new release excels at that. How to Wow  is kind of a marriage of the Photoshop Wow! series of books that Jack Davis  has written in the past and adds the complexity of digital photography thanks  to Ben Willmore's previous book releases and his 'Photoshop for Photographers' series of conference sessions that make this a very unique book release.

That's because you're not just learning a lot of Photoshop effect techniques. Lots of books already teach you that. Here you learn how to  take the best digital photos, selecting the right file formats, the ways to calibrate your monitor properly, determining the best exposures for your shots and the best overall workflow in Photoshop. In fact, the first two chapters of this book are written to teach you all sorts of cool tips in Photoshop EXCEPT create cool effects. A lot of books do teach you that, but in a droll way. This book delivers and makes it easy to comprehend.

Yes, there are effects to learn, of course. What's really good is how they are organized. Each chapter offers thumbnails showing you the final effect (this is even in the table of contents), so you can immediately scan right to the page you want for the effect you want. How convenient! Why don't  more books do that? It would be like a recipe book showing you a small photo for a chocolate cake and then you'd know exactly what you want and where to get it.

The tutorials are top-notch but you wouldn't expect much less coming from two of the top Photoshop experts in the known universe. I immediately used two of the effects for a website I was developing. As good as the effects can be is the fact that the accompanying CD also offers all sorts of exclusive Photoshop tools, actions, styles, shapes, presets and more. Just adding these to your overall workflow will drastically improve your production and allow you to do many things with Photoshop you have not done before. In many ways, the CD is actually more valuable than the book it is attached to!

This is probably one of the best books currently out on Photoshop. It's  easy to follow, offers lots of examples, teaches you about digital photography and has a killer CD-ROM. You can't do much better than this book for learning Photoshop in a Flash. Now learning Flash.......

Ah, if Jack and Ben could just write a Flash How to Wow Book!
