How To Fix the Cache Problem in Dreamweaver

A simple workaround to get you designing faster By Dave Nagel
I was stymied for a little while. I use Dreamweaver 3 and 4 to lay out two Web sites on a daily basis?Creative Mac and Digital Media Designer. I also use Dreamweaver's cache function to speed up the layout and management of my sites. But as soon as I installed Dreamweaver 4, one of my site caches just wouldn't work properly.

Specifically, every time I switched over to Digital Media Designer and tried to save a file or pull one down from the remote server, I would get an annoying message telling me that Dreamweaver couldn't update my site cache, so I'd have to recreate it manually.

Well, I figured it out. It's a very simple fix, but it's one you might not like.

The site name "Digital Media Designer" takes up 22 characters. Dreamweaver maintains the site cache in a file called "Digital Media Designer.dws." That's 26 characters. It also maintains a file called "Digital Media DesignerChanged.txt." That name, unfortunately, exceeds the Mac's current file name limit, so Dreamweaver was unable to create the file in the first place.

The simple fix to this is to go into your site definitions and change the name of your site to accommodate this limit. I changed mine to "DMD," so now I have a file called "DMD.dws" and "DMDChanged.txt," both well within the Mac's file name limit.
