House panel wants session with ex-Countrywide CEOHouse panel wants interview with ex-Countrywide CEO on VIP discounts for government officials
WASHINGTON (AP) ' A House committee wants to interview the former Countrywide Financial CEO in its investigation of discount mortgages given to members of Congress and other government officials.
The Associated Press on Wednesday obtained a letter from House Oversight committee chairman Darrell Issa requesting the session with Angelo Mozilo.
The letter to Mozilo's attorney said documents show that Mozilo personally referred government officials and others to the VIP program known internally as "Friends of Angelo." Those entering the program received discounted loans.
So far, congressional investigations and published reports have identified a current and a former senator, and four current House members who went through the VIP program.
Countrywide was purchased by Bank of America in 2008. Countrywide's subprime loans helped trigger the nation's foreclosure crisis.
