Hollywood Panel at USC to Discuss Digital Cinema's ImpactIn conjunction with new Larta report on digital cinema
Attended by technology and entertainment industry leaders, this evening event will feature a panel session, Digital Cinema: Hollywood's Emerging Challenge, opened by Dean Elizabeth Daley of the USC School of Cinema and Television. The panel will examine the entertainment industrys efforts to implement a widespread digital theatrical distribution system that potentially could save from $800 million to $1 billion a year, addressing the challenges that D-Cinema poses to the industry.
The benefits of digital distribution include big cost reductions, the elimination of conventional distribution, optimized processing for other markets, and more options for extending creative product to new audiences. But there are many questions, including who will bear the costs, what standards should be set, how filmmakers and the post production industry will adapt, and how quality and technical issues could delay or even prevent widespread deployment.
Larta's report, Hollywood Unstrung 2, was sponsored by Microsoft. It discusses the key players in this space, including studios and filmmakers, post production companies, distribution businesses, hardware and software providers, and the exhibition community. The report also examines digital transitions that the industry has recently struggled with successfully and unsuccessfully, including digital music, Video on Demand, interactive gaming, and online content and marketing.
