Holipalooza: Holiday Meetup Raises $10,025 for Local Charities

(December 21, 2011)

CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 12/21/11 -- On Wednesday December 7 Calgarians from 18 groups and associations decided to "Get Together and Give Together" at a holiday event dubbed "Holipalooza". The 200 plus people in attendance at Melrose Cafe and Bar had a rousing good time. Perhaps more importantly they also raised $10,025 for five local charities.

"Our sponsors identified charities they wanted us to support," said chief organizer Donna McTaggart. "The proceeds will be split between Brown Bagging It, The Mustard Seed, the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank."

The Holipalooza meetup came about as a result of conversations between two local social media groups: Social Media Breakfast Calgary (SMBYYC) and Third Tuesday Calgary (TTyyc).

"Donna and I were discussing how a combined holiday party would be so much more fun and powerful," said Doug Lacombe, TTyyc organizer "then Donna came up with the idea of making it a multi-group fundraising event. It really took off quickly from there."

Sponsor Melrose Cafe and Bar got behind the concept, giving Holipalooza a home. Yelp Canada, Matrix Video Communications Corp., Hangarcat Films, Osum Oil Sands Corp., communicatto, Spatial Technologies and BullFrog Power also signed on as sponsors giving the event much needed support and momentum.

In addition to live music provided by Mike Hanes and DJ music by DJ Markoshi, attendees were treated to gourmet samplings from Charcut Roast House, Melrose Cafe and Bar, Ming Eat Drink, CRAVE Cupcakes and Skyy Vodka.

A silent auction with highly coveted items donated by an array of corporate and individual donors rounded out the fundraising effort, resulting in $10,025 to split between the charities at final tally.

Each of the 18 groups involved provided volunteer support, marketing and guidance, making the event possible. The Holipalooza steering committee couldn't have pulled off such a successful first event without the commitment and dedication of these groups:
