Hey Baby

Dave Meyers' Music Video for No Doubt Features CGI Talents from A52 (November 20, 2001)
Visual effects and broadcast design powerhouse A52 today announced details of their 3D design and visual effects work for FM Rocks and director Dave Meyers for No Doubt's music video for their new single, "Hey Baby." "Hey Baby" is the first single from the band's upcoming Interscope Records release "Rock Steady," which is due to hit stores on Dec. 11. The video debuted on MTV on Nov. 7.

The colorful, high-energy on-screen performance from No Doubt's Gwen Stefani, Tom Dumont, Tony Kanal and Adrian Young - crafted as a tribute to the band's female groupies - involves live- action shot in various locations around Los Angeles, as well as green-screen footage that was composited into three CG worlds created by the artists at A52.

"A52 helped me create 3D worlds out of some design elements that Gwen wanted to use," said veteran music video director Dave Meyers, whose recent credits include the Music Video Production Association's 2001 Rap Video of the Year, Outkast's "Bombs Over Baghdad" - as well as Missy Elliot's "Get Ur Freak On," a video nominated for six 2001 MTV Video Music Awards.

FM Rocks' project producer Ron Mohrhoff cited A52's enthusiasm and their creative vision as prime reasons for their selection. "A52 seems to reserve a part of their business for doing fun experimental things that aren't necessarily about the money, but that are about doing something really different and really cool. That came across in our initial meeting," Mohrhoff explained.

A52's project producers Scott Boyahan and Jon Jacobson worked with visual effects supervisor Patrick Murphy and A52's full complement of visual effects artists to provide the company's signature clean-up, color-grading and finishing for live-action elements via discreet flame* and inferno* and Henry Infinity - but also to incorporate the high-impact 3D design elements created by A52's award-winning CGI team.

"One of the great shots is where we have the 'words in space' effect," said Ron Mohrhoff. "We shot Gwen on a turntable and as she turns the whole world kind of turns in behind her; that one hero shot in the middle of the video is an especially cool piece of CGI work."

Mohrhoff also credited A52's CGI team for creating the undulating 3D houndstooth surface, which along with the other 3D backgrounds was created using Silicon Grail Chalice software, animated and lit in Side Effects Software's Houdini and composited in Chalice, all running on SGI Octane workstations. The animations were rendered on SGI Origin 2000 via Pixar's Renderman.

"Patrick Murphy, Rick Hassen and Scott Boyajan really came through for us," Mohrhoff continued. "Patrick and Mark Loso were the guys we met with on day one; they have a great reel, they have a creative vision, they understood what we wanted and they were the beacons of the project."

Meyers' final thoughts hit a similar note: "I love Patrick to death; he really saved us when things got hectic. I trusted his vision."

A52's project team was led by executive producers Darcy Leslie Parsons and Rick Hassen and producers Scott Boyajan and Jon Jacobson, and also included visual effects supervisors and inferno* artists Mark Alan Loso and Patrick Murphy (who also served as on-set visual effects supervisor), inferno* artist Tim Bird, Infinity artists Dan Sumpter and Stan Kellam and online editor Scott Johnson. The project's 3D animators were Denis Gauthier, Westley Sarokin and Jeff Willette.

Production was overseen by FM Rock's executive producer Craig Fanning and also included producer Ron Mohrhoff, director of photography James Hawkinson, production designer Bernadette Dus and post coordinator Elizabeth Ryan.
