Heuris, JVC Ship 'Pro Indie HD Toolkit'

High-definition suite includes capture, transfer and encoding utilities By Dave Nagel
Heuris and JVC Professional Products have released a new software suite called the Pro Indie HD Toolkit. The suite consists of three tools for capturing, recording and encoding HD footage, including transfer tools for JVC's JY-HD10U and GR-HD1 cameras. It's available now for Mac OS X.

The Pro Indie Toolkit is a series of tools developed by Heuris for capturing and working with HD footage. It includes XtractorHDV, a tool for transferring video and audio from JVC's HD cameras to the desktop through a FireWire interface. It allows Apple's Final Cut Pro to import native HDV footage. It also includes XtoHD, a utility used to play an HD file back through a DVHS deck through a FireWire connection. It can also be used to record footage to a DVHS tape. And finally, it also includes MPEG Power Professional-DTVHD, an MPEG-2 encoding solution that reads QuickTime, AVI and OMF formats and outputs to ATSC HDTV resolution (1080i or 720p) at 19.2 Mbps.

The full Pro Indie Toolkit runs $4,785 and supports Mac OS X only. Components of the suite are also available for purchase separately. For more information, visit
