Heiress' lawyer to retake stand at Edwards trial

Lawyer of heiress to retake witness stand at John Edwards trail By The Associated Press

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) ' The lawyer for an heiress whose money is at the heart of criminal charges against John Edwards is to retake the witness stand at the former presidential candidate's corruption trial.

Alex D. Forger testified last week that Edwards' then-lawyer Wade Smith told him in the fall of 2008 that the former candidate agreed that $725,000 given by 101-year-old Rachel "Bunny" Mellon had been provided to help him. Forger will face cross-examination from Edwards' defense team Monday.

Some of Mellon's money was used to hide the Democrat's pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008. Whether Edwards had knowledge of the cover-up is a key question in his prosecution for campaign finance violations.

Edwards has pleaded not guilty. He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
