Hearing for man accused of shooting at Pentagon

Detention hearing for ex-Marine from Va. accused of shooting Pentagon, Marine Corps museum By The Associated Press

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) ' A magistrate is scheduled to hear evidence on whether a former Marine from Virginia accused of firing shots at the Pentagon and other military targets should remain in jail while he awaits trial.

Federal prosecutors in Alexandria, Va., want 23-year-old Yonathan Melaku to remain in jail. They say they have evidence linking him to a series of overnight shootings in October 2010 at not only the Pentagon but also the Marine Corps museum in Quantico and other military targets. The hearing is set for Thursday.

Melaku was arrested and charged in June when he was spotted after dark in Arlington National Cemetery with a backpack containing potential explosives material and notations referring to jihad and Osama bin Laden. That arrest set off a security scare in and around the Pentagon.
