Hang and Bang

Is this a market segment or just a slang thang? By Max Kopsho
As I travel the Americas conducting training session after training session, I hear one phrase that makes me cringe when I hear it. The phrase: "Hang and Bang." Integrators, distributors, customers, sales people, and consultants have used this phrase alike. I donít want to point any fingers and say where this phrase came from, but Iíve heard his initials are Gary Kayye (oops) I mean G.K. (Of all the times I could pick from to lose the backspace key, I pick now)

So why do I feel a little queasy when I hear that phrase? Maybe itís because, by in large, most of the people I know and work with make their very livlihood with "Hang and Bang" solutions. I guess another reason it bugs me is the way people say "Hang and Bang." It sounds as if they were saying "Spinach and Broccoli Milk Shakes". Their face contorts a little and they have this deep chill go through their body.

So what are we really talking about when we say "Hang and Bang?" I believe this refers to the simple, low cost, entry level installations. These installations are maybe one or two sources, a display device, and an interface with minimal distribution to tie it all together. Something like this would be "Hang and Bang:"

So whatís my beef? Well, we know margins based on product alone are becoming slimmer and slimmer with the introduction of more and more manufacturers in this industry. Now couple that with how the margins are being affected by the advances being made on their production lines.
