HS Design, Inc. Recognized as a Supplier to a Finalist for Two 2012 Medical Design Excellence Awards:BioMarker Strategies SnapPath 1000 & Canfield Scientifics DermScope(April 02, 2012)

HS Design (HSD) announced today that it was selected as a supplier to a finalist for two 2012 Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA). The two supplier finalist categories are: In Vitro Diagnostics for the Biomarker Strategies SnapPath 1000 instrument and Radiological and Electromechanical Devices for the Canfield Scientific DermScope.
In the In Vitro Diagnostics category, HSD won for the Biomarker Strategies SnapPath 1000 instrument. The device, developed with funding support from the National Cancer Institute, is an automated live-tumor-cell processing device that enables next-generation biomarker tests, known as Functional Signaling Profiles (FSPs), to guide targeted drug therapy selection. Douglas P. Clark, MD, co-founder and Acting CEO for BioMarker Strategies remarked, It is an honor to be recognized by the MDEA judges. The SnapPath platform responds to a growing need for new approaches to solid tumor testing that will reveal how a patients tumor will respond to targeted cancer therapies. HS Design (Gladstone, NJ) teamed with BioMarker Strategies (Baltimore, MD) and Sparton Medical (Strongsville, OH) for the design, engineering and manufacturing of the platform.
HSD won in the Radiological and Electromechanical Device Category for the Canfield Scientific DermScope. The DermScope is an accessory for the iPhone 4 and 4s that enables dermatoscopic image viewing and capture using the iPhones integral camera and display. It is used by dermatologists to view and photograph highly magnified areas of a patients skin. These images are used to assess diseases of the skin, document the condition at different time points, and communicate the condition with the patient and other skin care professionals. It is a mobile system that can be used in any setting. Unlike traditional dermatoscopic devices, the DermScope does not require the operators face to be positioned in close proximity to the affected area on the patient. Held at arms length, the DermScope conveniently captures a highly magnified image on any part of the anatomy.

The MDEA (http://www.MDEAwards.com) is the medical device industrys premier design awards competition and is the only awards program that exclusively recognizes contributions and advances in the design of medical products. Entries are evaluated on the basis of their design and engineering features, including innovative use of materials, user-related functions that improve healthcare delivery and change traditional medical attitudes or practices. Judges also consider features that provide enhanced benefits to the patient, and the ability of the product development team to overcome design and engineering challenges so that the product meets its clinical objectives.
Finalists in each of the competitions ten categories were officially announced in the April issue of Medical Device and Diagnostics Industry (http://www.mddionline.com) magazine. The winners will be announced on May 23, 2012, at a cocktail reception being held in conjunction with the MD&M East event, May 22-24, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia.
