HP Debuts Linux Based X2000/x4000 Workstations Running at 2GHz

(October 01, 2001)
Hewlett-Packard Company announced three personal workstations with 2GHz performance; the Linux-based HP workstation x2000, the Linux-based HP workstation x4000, and the Windows-based HP workstation x4000.

The HP workstation x2000 with Linux is based on the Intel Pentium 4 processor while the HP workstation x4000 Linux and Windows versions run on the new Intel Xeon processor. With all three workstations, HP provides a pre-installed, reliable operating system that includes support and consulting.

The Linux-based x4000 workstation is built around the 2GHz Intel Xeon processor and uses the Intel NetBurst microarchitecture to deliver processing power for video, audio, 3-D graphics and the latest Internet technologies.

The HP workstation x4000 with Windows offers continued performance enhancements and keeps customers on the leading edge of technology. With the 2GHz Intel Xeon processor, the x4000 workstation meets the performance needs demanded by the DCC, electronic design automation (EDA), government information systems (GIS), and other design and graphic intensive marketplaces. With HP's graphics leadership program, the HP workstation x4000 with Windows continues to offer graphics choices important to these users.

Additional details of this introduction include:

SERVICE: HP engineers will provide full technical support for all three workstations running Red Hat Linux 7.1, Windows NTŪ or Windows 2000 Professional.

LEADERSHIP GRAPHICS PROGRAM: All systems provide a range of 2D and 3D graphics solutions, ranging from entry level to extreme performance, with guaranteed ISV certification through HP's leadership graphics program. This program offers HP's graphics expertise with a breadth of graphics products designed to address users' graphics requirements. In addition, HP develops graphics for Windows and Linux, and has strategic alliances with leading graphics vendors to provide customers access to the broadest choice of graphics solutions available.

With the addition of Linux support of the NVIDIA cards on the x2000 and x4000, HP now offers the same graphics support on Linux and Windows workstations. The x2000 and x4000 workstations with Linux represent, by far, the broadest graphic card choice for Linux workstations in the industry today. The following graphics cards are supported by all three workstations:
  • Matrox G450
  • NVIDIA Quadro2 MXR
  • NVIDIA Quadro2 Pro
  • ATI FireGL2
  • ATI FireGL4

AVAILABILITY: The HP workstations x2000 and x4000 with Linux and the HP workstation x4000 with Windows are available today through direct and channel sales.
