HP Announces High-End Technical Workstation with Intel Xeon CPUs

(January 14, 2002)
Hewlett-Packard is introducing a more powerful version of its high-end technical computing workstation, the HP workstation x4000. Key features of the new HP workstation x4000 are dual processor capability leveraging Intel's newest Xeon processor (2.20GHz/512KB), which doubles the RAM expandability, and offers a choice of numerous 2D and 3D graphics solutions optimized by HP's leading graphics experts to meet the demands of power users.

The new Xeon processors with 512K cache, operate at frequencies of 1.8GHz, 2.0GHz and 2.2GHz. The larger cache and faster processors result in a significant gain in compute power and application performance.

The large memory supports up to 4GB RDRAM. There is a RAID option for disk mirroring or disk striping and a disk expansion kit is available that supports up to four hard drives.

A wide variety of factory-integrated graphics card options, backed by HP's leadership graphics program, are available for the HP workstation x4000. New additions to the lineup are NVIDIA's Quadro2 EX graphics card for entry-level 3D and the ATI FIRE GL 8800 mid-range 3D graphics card.

The NVIDIA Quadro2 EX graphics card is a cost-effective, professional OpenGL graphics solution that is ideal for mid-market mechanical computer aided design (MCAD) and entry digital content creation (DCC) markets.

The ATI FIRE GL 8800 is aimed at the professional CAD, DCC 3D animation and game developer markets. It features 128MB of memory, which is double the previous mid-range offering.

Pricing and Availability

Pricing for the HP workstation x4000 starts at $2,410 street. The base configuration consists of a 1.8 GHz Xeon processor, 256 MB memory, 18GB SCSI disk, a Matrox G450 graphics card and a CD-ROM drive. The RAID option can be ordered in January, but will ship in February.

The HP workstation x4000 is available with Windows 2000 Professional, Windows NT 4.0 and Red Hat Linux 7.1. Windows XP will be available in March.
