HI-WIRE Help Bring ?A Prairie Home Companion to DVDRiver Road & HI-WIRE produce 30th Anniversary Show (November 30, 2004)
After 30 years of live radio broadcasts of ?A Prairie Home Companion, the popular show is now available on DVD. River Road Entertainment, a Minnesota-based integrated entertainment company involved in the production of feature films and documentaries, produced the DVD working hand-in-hand with post experts HI-WIRE.
?This is an exciting project as it marks the first time in 30 years that people can watch Garrison Keillors entertaining show in the comfort of their own homes, comments Lisa Meyer, River Road Entertainment Managing Executive. ?Its a wonderful project and we were very excited to be a part of the entire process from production concept to the 24p HD shoot, DVD production and design process.
HI-WIRE Managing Director Tammy Kimbler Weber, who oversaw the project from concept through completion, agrees: ?For those of us that grew up listening to Garrison Keillors shows, helping to create the DVD was a true honor. It was also a creative challenge that utilized the talent of every person at HI-WIRE, each department working in synch to produce the best possible results with the millions of fans in mind.
A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor: 30th Broadcast Season Celebration DVD gives far-flung listeners a chance to experience ?A Prairie Home Companion from the best seats in the house, at the famed Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, Minnesota. The show was filmed using an eight HD camera set-up during a live May 2004 broadcast from the Fitzgerald. A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor: 30th Broadcast Season Celebration DVD celebrates public radios longest running and most successful variety and music show created by Garrison Keillor, one of Americas foremost humorists and storytellers.
With a running time of 106 minutes, the DVD includes the 30th anniversary live broadcast with Keillor and cast performing their special blend of folk, blues and gospel songs and comedy sketches. The broadcast includes a special appearance by neo-country stars BR549, special guests Philip Brunelle, Jearlyn Steele and Inga Swearingen, and cast regulars Sue Scott, Tom Keith, Fred Newman and Tim Russell, with music by The Guys All-Star Show Band. Special bonus material includes additional sketches and songs, a sound effects ?Balloon Trip, and a behind-the-scenes photo gallery of rehearsals and candid shots all told, more than two hours of material.
The 24p HD eight-camera production shoot took place over two nights of performance, after which the footage was sent to HI-WIRE and the best from each night was selected and edited to create a seamless one hour and 45 minute program. The bonus material on the DVD includes footage of performances by BR549 and still photography taken behind the scenes. HI-WIRES Jeff Kopp designed the DVD menus and edited the gallery slide show and Melissa Wagner designed all the DVD and CD packaging. Tony Mills and Brian Wagner, also from HI-WIRE, seamlessly united all of the elements for the 24p master. Carl White from HI-WIREs sister company, BWN, mixed over 50 tracks in stereo and 5.1 surround. The DVD was created in such a way that viewers feel that they are in the heart of the action moving from the theaters audience, to the stage performance to the backstage activity.
Offering a unique inside look at one of radios most beloved shows, the DVD is not only a collectors item for any fan of ?A Prairie Home Companion, but introduces others to a cultural phenomenon that has become as much a part of the American landscape as Lake Wobegon itself. It also represents a collaboration of hundreds of talents, from Keillor himself to the onstage performers to the production and post teams.
?A Prairie Home Companion is produced by Prairie Home Productions in conjunction with River Road Entertainment and distributed nationwide by American Public Media. The DVD and CD are distributed by Rounder Records. The DVD can be purchased at Barnes and Noble, on Amazon.com and at Best Buy and Target stores.
