HHB PORTADRIVE Records Jackson's King Kong

Sound Mixer, Peek picks PORTADRIVE for location sound recording (September 29, 2004)

Oscar-winning Sound Mixer, Hammond Peek, has chosen the HHB PORTADRIVE for location sound recording on "King Kong." Peter Jackson's remake of the 1933 classic commenced shooting in New Zealand in September of 2004.

Sound Mixer, Peek, worked alongside Jackson on five features since 1994 including all three "Lord Of The Rings" movies including "Return Of The King," for which he won an Academy Award.

"Solid build, eight-track flexibility and reliable hard disk recording made PORTADRIVE the recorder of choice for "King Kong," reports Stephen Buckland, himself an experienced sound mixer, of HHB's New Zealand distributor, Sound Techniques. "The PORTADRIVE also excelled in trials to check compatibility with post-production workflow, a very important consideration for the production."

Jackson has said that recreating "King Kong" will fulfill a childhood dream, with the original black and white movie inspiring him at a young age to become a filmmaker.

For the PORTADRIVE, King Kong is the latest in a series of high-profile productions underway around the world in which HHB's groundbreaking portable HD recorder lies at the heart of the audio acquisition process. With features including eight-channel 24-bit/96kHz recording in industry-standard formats, to a rugged, removable HD, ultra-high quality mic preamps and independent on-board mixers for recording, headphone monitoring and a director's mix, the PORTADRIVE is being hailed as the next generation in film sound recording technology.

Commenting on the news, HHB managing director, Ian Jones, said, "The PORTADRIVE sets new standards in performance and flexibility but, equally as importantly, it's a recorder that sound mixers can operate straight out of the box, and it fits seamlessly into the post-production workflow. Hammond's decision to use a PORTADRIVE on "King Kong" is another endorsement of the design approach we've taken with PORTADRIVE, and we're naturally delighted that it is playing a role in such an important motion picture production."

HHB products are distributed exclusively in the United States, Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean by Sennheiser Electronic Corporation. It joins a list of distinguished audio brands that Sennheiser distributes including Neumann Microphones, InnovaSON Digital Consoles, Rosendahl Synchronization Systems, Turbosound Loudspeakers and Chevin Research Amplifiers.
