Ground broken on 225-acre elephant sanctuary in Florida; project a collaboration of 73 zoos By The Associated Press

FELLSMERE, Fla. (AP) ' Officials have broken ground on a new elephant sanctuary in Florida.

The National Elephant Center is being built on a 225-acre plot of land west of Sebastian on Florida's Atlantic coast.

Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers ( reports its first phase will transform 25 to 30 acres of orange grove into pasture for up to 10 elephants.

The project is a collaboration of 73 zoos.
