Grass Valley Viper Cameras Picked for Interactive ResearchUniversity of Surrey takes eight digital cinematography cameras for virtual imaging project (November 03, 2005)
Grass Valley Viper FilmStream digital cinematography camera
Professor Adrian Hilton, of the University of Surrey, explains further: ?Our research uses multiple camera systems to allow capture of a 3D representation of a scene, from which the producer or viewer could have free control over a virtual camera. In essence, a very high resolution capture of the scene should allow us to create a video-realistic synthesis of real objects, people and environments, he said.
While this research has been under way for the past ten years, the Viper FilmStream camera, capable of operating at full resolution HD or 2k digital cinematography, is a vital advance for the project. ?Previous work using standard definition video, in collaboration with BBC R&D, has been limited by the camera resolution for reconstruction in critical areas like the actors face, Hilton said. ?The Viper will allow improved reconstruction quality which could be used directly in broadcast for both studio production and outdoor events such as sports.
?This is an extraordinarily exciting project, which could have a major impact on television, movies, games and interactive entertainment in the future, said Marc Valentin, president of the Grass Valley business within Thomson. ?Professor Hiltons selection of the Viper as providing the highest resolution available is a great endorsement of the camera which we initially designed for Hollywood and has gone on to succeed in many more markets. We look forward to fulfilling universities research needs on advanced imaging technology and other topics.
