Grass Valley Gear Supports Democratic National ConventionProQue Industries using Profile servers to distribute video and graphics (July 28, 2004)
Grass Valley digital display equipment from Thomson is helping Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry put his best face forward for attendees to the political convention in Boston and for American viewers across the country watching at home on network TV, as part of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) this week.
Set up on site in temporary facilities inside the FleetCenter in Boston is one Grass Valley PVS 1000 Profile XP Media Platform standard-definition server (with eight separate channels), four PDR 300 servers handling MPEG-encoded files, and two Profile PDR 100 servers distributing JPEG files. The equipment is being operated by ProQue Industries, an A/V services company, to enable random access playback displayed in 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios on all of the large screens on the FleetCenter stage as well as to fill various plasma screens throughout the convention hall. All of the Profile servers are networked via Fibre Channel connections, to allow the sharing of files and storage space.
ProQue Industries is using the Profiles with approximately seven hours of attached storage per server, providing enough space to handle both pre-built effects (created on Apples Final Cut Pro and Adobe After Effects systems), as well as to create effects from separate elements during the live show if necessary. Due to the Profiles frame-accurate cueing capability with key signals, Rick Edwards a principal at ProQue has been able to easily synchronize the Profiles together while maintaining a consistent high-resolution look for the video segments throughout the three-day convention, even though original material has been obtained from a variety of sources.
Grass Valley continues its unmatched server leadership with the new Profile 6G line of video servers with the addition of the PVS 3500, PVS 3000 which offers SD/HD operation in one frame, full MXF and Gigabit Ethernet support, and low-cost storage. It is also available as a standalone system or as an upgrade package for existing PVS 1000 and PVS 1100 Profile XP customers. It offers HD vertical ancillary data support for captioning and interactive TV applications, as well as new enhancements that expand the platforms channel count, storage capacity and bandwidth.
