Grammy Award-Winning Artist Imogen Heap at Royal Albert Hall to Be First 1080 HD Live Smooth Web Broadcasted Concert

Rebild Productions and iStreamPlanet Team Up With Elemental Technologies, Akamai and Microsoft to Provide One of the Highest Resolution Live Web Broadcasts (November 04, 2010)

LONDON -- (Marketwire) -- 11/04/10 -- Rebild Productions and iStreamPlanet announced today that they have teamed with Akamai, Elemental Technologies and Microsoft Corp. to provide a live web broadcast of the Imogen Heap concert live at the Royal Albert Hall, November 5, 2010 at 7pm GMT. The concert will be broadcast across the Akamai HD Network and will be the first concert streamed live in 1080 HD in Microsoft IIS Smooth Streaming. It will be available for global viewing at The 1080 HD stream will be sourced from Elemental Technologies' platform and at a peak bit rate of 5Mbps. It will also be available in other formats including Apple HTTP Segmented for the iPhone and iPad, as well as Flash.

Imogen Heap is a Grammy Award-winning British singer and songwriter. She is known for her work as part of the musical duo Frou Frou and her solo albums, which she writes, produces, and mixes. In 2006, Heap was nominated for two Grammy Awards. She has produced three solo albums, the latest of which is 2009's Ellipse, which was a North American chart success and earned Heap two Grammy nominations and a Grammy Award. The live web broadcast will include an "opening act" of the Love the Earth film,, a nature film created from clips that have been submitted by Heap's fans around the world, then edited to five movements that Heap composed. She will be conducting an orchestra live during the film in what is sure to be a unique experience for her fans the world over. Imogen Heap will then headline with her full band.

"We are thrilled to work with Rebild Productions and Imogen Heap to provide services for this first-of-its-kind web broadcast," said Randy Levine, SVP Digital Partnerships, iStreamPlanet. "Rebild's founder Chris Courtney and iStreamPlanet both have a history of pioneering in the space. We are looking forward to a fantastic event for people all over the world to enjoy."

The live web broadcast is made possible by back-hauling the HD feed to iStreamPlanet's Las Vegas, NV US Broadcast Operations Center from the Royal Albert Hall in London. It will then be encoded in IIS Smooth Streaming, Flash as well as Apple HTTP segmented for the iPhone and iPad. The IIS Smooth Streaming feed, which allows viewers with the proper bandwidth to view it in full 1080 HD, will be encoded using Elemental Live, which uses the power of graphics processing units (GPUs) to encode the 1080 streams in real time. iStreamPlanet will provide cloud-based IIS Origin Services for the streams to be delivered across the Akamai HD Network. In order for a viewer to watch the full 1080 version, the Microsoft Silverlight video player will check for three things: the network conditions (bandwidth at the end-users' location that can play back 5Mbps), the CPU of the computer, and that the computer has a 1080-capable display. If it does not, the bit rate will automatically adjust to give the user the best possible viewing experience given their Internet connection and conditions.

"Microsoft is excited to see the collaboration between this group of innovative companies who have come together to provide a web broadcast of the Imogen Heap concert," said David Sayed, senior product manager for Silverlight at Microsoft. "This broadcast is a great example of how Microsoft partners are utilizing our media platform with Silverlight and IIS Smooth Streaming to provide viewers a unique viewing experience."

"What makes this event interesting is that a live HD webcast at 1080 is actually delivering Blu-ray quality audio and video through a globally connected network," said Christopher Courtney, founder of Rebild Productions. "When I first started live webcasting in 1994 it was a very humble beginning as far as audio and video quality, but five years later 700 kilobit streams were common. Now in 2010 we are proving through this 1080 HD live webcast that the Internet, thanks to partners iStreamPlanet, Elemental Technologies and Akamai, is rapidly becoming a global video network with no difference in quality compared with traditional television."
