Gov't asks judge to stick with Demjanjuk ruling

Gov't wants judge in Ohio to maintain Demjanjuk ruling denying bid to regain US citizenship By The Associated Press

CLEVELAND (AP) ' The government wants a judge in Ohio to stick with his decision denying convicted Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk (dem-YAHN'-yuk) a chance to regain his U.S. citizenship.

In a filing Thursday night in Cleveland federal court, the government says Demjanjuk's appeal for reconsideration is without merit.

The retired auto worker from suburban Cleveland was convicted by a German court on more than 28,000 counts of accessory to murder. The court found he had worked as a guard at the Sobibor death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland.

He claims the government failed to disclose evidence including a 1985 secret FBI report uncovered by The Associated Press. The document indicated the FBI believed a Nazi ID card purportedly showing that he served as a death camp guard was a Soviet-made fake.
