Martika began her career as a child actor, appearing in the film version of "Annie" and then starring on the Disney Channel series "Kids Incorporated," featured alongside fellow future stars Fergie, Mario Lopez and others. She went on to release two globally successful solo albums in the late 1980s and 1990s, selling over four million copies worldwide.
Martika signed with CBS/Sony records in 1988 and released her debut self-titled album "Martika," which spawned several Billboard top 40 hits and sold over 3 million units worldwide. Her first single "More Than You Know," was a top 20 hit on the American pop charts. A year later, its follow-up, "Toy Soldiers," was the Billboard #1 hit song in the U.S. for 2 weeks and certified gold. The song was also a Top 5 hit around the world and made Martika an international star. Her follow-up album, "Martika's Kitchen," co-produced by Prince, also became a hit at home and overseas. The pop-star toured the world in support of her growing success, playing to packed crowds from Europe to Japan. The album's first single, "Love...Thy Will Be Done," became Martika's second U.S. Top 10 hit and was #1 in Australia for five straight weeks.
Throughout the '90s, Martika continued working in television and had a recurring role on the hit series "Wiseguy." She also wrote songs for singer Patti LaBelle and the "Arachnophobia" soundtrack. During the 2000 Latin music explosion, Martika re-emerged into the music world, singing backing vocals on various projects and contributing lyrics to other artists. Missing the stage, Martika formed a duo called "Oppera," which resulted in the release of two albums. Around the same time, rapper Eminem used a sample of her biggest U.S. hit, "Toy Soldiers," for "Like Toy Soldiers," a track on his album "Encore," which reached #1 in the UK.
