Ghent PDF Workgroup Releases 2004 Specifications

Specifications for the use of PDF/X-1a:2001 PLUS. (May 21, 2004)

The Ghent PDF Workgroup releases for the second time in its existence a series of specifications for the use of PDF/X-1a:2001 PLUS in vertical segments in the Graphic Arts Industry.

Following the first (V1) specifications launched in February of 2003, the Ghent PDF Workgroup is releasing the Version 2 / 2004 specifications for delivering print ready PDFs according to international standard for:

- Magazine Advertisements (CMYK)
- Newspaper Advertisements (CMYK / Spot)
- Web Offset printing cold set (newsprint) (CMYK or CMYK/Spot)
- Web Offset printing heat set (CMYK or CMYK/Spot)
- Sheet fed offset printing (CMYK, CMYK/Spot, CMYK/Spot with low res images)

The 2004 specifications are an upgrade from the 2003 specifications with respect to:

Updated settings for support of recent changed spot color specifications

Support for specific PDF/X-1a settings when using Adobe Acrobat Distiller 6.0 Professional

Minor change in creating PDFs with regards to PDF Settings / Job Options in Adobe Acrobat 5 and 6 with gradients / smooth shades

New checks that restrict PDF 1.5 issues, in order to stay PDF/X-1a compliant when using Acrobat 6.0

Directions on how to create proper Postscript for print ready PDF/X-1a PLUS according to the specifications in QuarkXPress 6.1

Directions and settings files of InDesign CS Export PDF

The 2004 specifications and setting files will become available from May 2004 at:

About the Ghent PDF Workgroup
The Ghent PDF Workgroup, formed in June 2002, is an international assembly of industry associations and suppliers from across Europe and the United States. Its objective is to establish and disseminate process specifications for best practices in graphic arts workflows. Members comprise graphic arts associations in Belgium, The Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Denmark, Italy, Austria, The United Kingdom and the United States, as well as observer-status organizations from Sweden, Norway and Germany.
