Gamma Ray Digital Restoration

GRD Restores the massive Hungarian epic film called "Satantango" (April 05, 2008)
Gamma Ray Digital's Perry Paolantino has been working on his company for years, and with the growing experience, they've been able to take on bigger and bigger jobs.  When he recently sent out an email, indicating that he was restoring a 7 hour film, I was surprised by the film's length.  It's a huge undertaking for GDR.

Gamma Ray Digital completes the restoration and DVD authoring of Satantango, Bela Tarr's seven and a half hour cinematic masterpiece. Facets Video will release the Hungarian epic as a four DVD set later this year.

"Gamma Ray Digital has in many ways been a lifesaver for us at Facets Video," said Ed Husayko, Facets` Director of Marketing. "They have brought back the original luster to so many important titles that we that we thought might be impossible to repair, at a cost that worked within our budget. They are not just a supplier, they are our partner."

Restoration of the film was performed on the MTI Correct system, and included motion stabilization, scratch concealment, manual dirt and dust removal, as well as grading and density adjustments. Gamma Ray Digital worked closely with Facets Video to create this new Director-approved master.

"The print this transfer was made from was in reasonably good shape, but given the scale of the project there were some serious challenges to overcome," says Gamma Ray Digital's President, Perry Paolantonio. "The amount of footage to go through was just tremendous - well in excess of three quarters of a million frames of video in total, and the fixes ranged from simple dust removal to correcting serious motion stabilization issues. The total number of individual fixes is close to half a million," he added.

Hailed by critics as landmark cinema, SATANTANGO transcends all genres, surpasses all styles. The story revolves around an abandoned agricultural collective, where a handful of lost and lonely characters eke out a living until a charismatic con man arrives to shake things up. However, the richness of the film comes from the director's singular vision. A master of melancholy, and a virtuoso of the long take and immaculate composition, he has been rightly called "one of the most innovative and accomplished auteurs in filmmaking today" (MoMA).

Gamma Ray Digital, Inc. is the only facility in New England using the MTI CORRECT film restoration system. The company provides a wide range of mastering and finishing services for the feature film market, including frame by frame digital restoration, color correction, Blu-Ray and DVD authoring.
