G-SAM and IDEAlliance Form CoalitionTo promote standards-based, digital asset management solutions (September 24, 2004)
G-SAM (Global Society for Asset Management), a non- profit trade association that constitutes a global cross-section of today's digital content economy, and IDEAlliance (International Digital Enterprise Alliance), an association advancing technology standards, solutions and best practices for publishing and digital content-driven enterprises, today announced that they are joining forces to support the digital media industry through the coordinated development of standardized specifications, best practices and guidelines, educational seminars, and peer support networks.
In response to the recommendation of key industry leaders and a shared membership base, G-SAM and IDEAlliance have reached an agreement to work cooperatively to maximize the unique contributions and interests of the two organizations to the overall benefit of the industry. By working together, these organizations form a powerful coalition that can generate a tremendous synergy through developing and deploying a cross-industry, standards-based framework for digital asset management.
According to the agreement, the organizations will work together to increase communication, outreach, and education to maximize industry-wide embrace of enabling technology solutions that facilitate digital asset management. The organizations have agreed to coordinate their events, publications, online resources and standards-development process.
According to David Steinhardt, President and CEO of IDEAlliance, "Since 1999, IDEAlliance has aggressively sought to develop industry-wide specifications that will enable our membership to realize their dream of exploiting cross-media business opportunities. Industry standards to facilitate digital asset management are even more critical than ever in today's world where digital media flows not only within, but across organizations with different systems made up of tools from a multitude of vendors. Successful deployment of digital asset management solutions requires that all systems in this space share a common framework and language. IDEAlliance Working Groups bring together content providers and vendors to develop this cross-industry framework known collectively as PRISM (Publishing Requirements for Industry Standard Metadata). To date, IDEAlliance PRISM efforts have focused on developing the metadata framework based on XML and RDF and defining vocabularies to describe the management of digital rights and the text of articles from magazines and journals. New PRISM working groups are focusing on developing vocabularies to support digital image submission, digital image management and different types of assets that span web content, graphics, audio files, full length motion pictures, retail brand logos and even ring tones."
According to Richard Eberhart, founder and executive director of G-SAM, "The synergy between G-SAM and IDEAlliance is a clear win for everyone because together we can facilitate user understanding and adoption of DAM technologies that hold the key to future success for enterprises based on digital content."
As part of the new agreement, IDEAlliance will serve as official Association Sponsor for the Second Annual Global Society of Asset Management Conference to be held October 18 - 19 in Pasadena, CA. IDEAlliance will work closely with G-SAM to develop program content. IDEAlliance members will receive a discount on conference attendance.
