Furman Sound Announces New SMP+ Technology

Raises level of power purification and protection in A/V applications (June 02, 2005)

Furman Sound, the most widely recognized and trusted name in AC power conditioning, announced today that it is implementing an exclusive new power conditioning and protection technology, SMP+, across its product line. Many existing products have been or are in the process of being upgraded, and almost every new product will feature the proprietary technology that offers the greatest degree of protection on the market today.

The new Series Multi-Stage Protection Plus (SMP+) from Furman Sound delivers the purest AC power and the most comprehensive protection available, going far beyond what is found in traditional power strips. The proprietary technology combines three filtering and protection circuits -- LiFT for pure, linearly filtered AC power; SMP for surge and spike suppression; and EVS for automatic shutdown in response to over-voltage conditions -- on one compact PCB.

LiFT (Linear Filtering Technology) ensures that all sensitive audio/video components are fed linearly filtered AC power. Typical AC filters feature non-linear circuits, and while these power "cleaners" reduce some noise, they do so unevenly and can, in fact, add noise due to their filter's excessive resonant peaking. With Furman's LiFT, AC noise is suppressed evenly and consistently, ensuring consistent peak performance from A/V equipment.

SMP (Series Multi-Stage Protection) functions to protect equipment from damaging transient voltages by absorbing, clamping, and dissipating them. SMP allows Furman products to offer this protection without damaging any of their own internal components -- that is, they are virtually non-sacrificial -- which means they do their job again and again with no down-time, no maintenance, and no replacement parts. This proprietary technology allows it to feature an unlimited joule rating and has given products with SMP+ an unprecedented success rate.

EVS (Extreme Voltage Shutdown) responds to sustained over voltage conditions (137 V or greater) that would damage or destroy A/V equipment by shutting the system down. EVS protects against problems that might occur during normal operation, and also against accidental connections to 240-V lines or open neutral wiring.
