Fujinon HD Lenses Help Launch Successful IPTV Channel, SingleMalt.TVHigh-Quality Images Draw in Unprecedented Viewship (July 09, 2007) www.singlemalt.tv, cinematographer and CEO Rob Draper never expected such a huge response so quickly. In just six months, the channel has logged half a million viewers in 107 countries who watch the channel for an average of 69 minutes at a time.
After 30 years as a cinematographer, Draper said he never considered shooting in anything but high definition. ?Many questioned our decision to shoot in HD because they say its really not necessary, but I think weve proved that internet viewers appreciate high-quality imagery in much the same way that television viewers do. Shooting in HD also allows Draper to build a catalog of video that can be easily repurposed.
In order to satisfy the appetite of singlemalt.tv viewers, channel content is sought out in many locations. As many as five production crews working for Drapers Visionmill Production Company carry out a heavy production schedule in locations around the globe to capture scotch whiskey festivals and events, as well as interviews with distillery owners.
As a rule, all crews use either the Fujinon HA13X4.5BERM HD ENG-Style lenses or the HAc15x7.3 Cine-Style lens. Draper says for the most part he prefers to use the wide angle lens because of its ability to produce a feature film look. Visionmill crews have the lenses mounted on Panasonic Varicam HD Cameras and the HVX200 P2. Crews based in Scotland shoot on the HVX200 or Varicam, and crews in other countries use either Varicam HD or PAL Digi Beta. This July, the crews will standardize to use Panasonic AJ-HPX-2000 P2 HD camcorder and convert to a P2 workflow to simplify editing.
Draper credits the intense popularity of the newly launched IPTV offering with the high-quality look of the channels programming. ?Most IPTV channels start out with five- to 15-minute page views. I believe were way over that average because were delivering quality most people dont expect from the web, said Draper.
