Fujinon HD Lens Makes Qucik Work Of "Dash 4 Cash" Comedy PilotMarks a first for network programming shot with Sony?s XDCAM HD (July 06, 2007)
The show was produced by Kelsey Grammers GramNet productions in association with CBS/Paramount for the CW Network. At the request of CBS Network, the crew had to keep to a tight shooting schedule. The challenge before them: record the show quickly and affordably without sacrificing quality. Though ?Dash 4 Cash was completely scripted, it was shot to look and feel like a reality show, complete with the spontaneous action and rough lighting commonly found in popular reality shows. The team wrapped shooting in one week using Fujinon HS16X4.6BRM and XS13X3.BRM HD lenses mounted on Sony F350 XDCAM HD cameras. Both lenses were designed specifically to work with Sonys XDCAM format.
Eldreds career as a director/cameraman spans three decades and includes an award-winning list of documentary and television projects for all major television networks, including an Emmy award and DGA nomination. ?This has to be the fastest Ive ever worked on an episodic type of show, Eldred said. ?The combination of the Sony XDCAM HD and the Fujinon lenses really helped us along. We were efficient because Fujinons glass allowed us to shoot very wide and long without switching lenses. The fast and easy XDCAM really sped things up as well. Betty was amazed at the pace.
The HS16x4.6ERM is a high-quality HD lens with a high zoom ratio, wide angle and a built-in 2x range extender. With a focal length range of 4.6 to 74mm (x1) and 9.2 to 148mm (x2), a size diameter and length of 95 x 240mm, and a minimum object distance of 0.40m, the HS16x4.6ERM combines a wide angle of view with a 16x zoom range and 2x extender, enabling versatility never before achieved in a single zoom lens.
The XS13x3.3RM is a super wide angle lens with high optical quality, designed for the production market when looking for a creative look or when shooting in tight places such as offices, automobiles and aircraft cockpits. The XS13x3.3RM is a wide angle, ENG lens featuring an over 93 degrees horizontal field of view. It has a focal length of 3.3 to 43mm, a minimum object distance of 0.30m and a maximum relative aperture of 1:1.4 (3.3 to 32mm) and 1:1.9 (43mm).
Eldred said since this was the first time the Sony XDCAM and Fujinon half-inch lens would be held up to prime time network scrutiny, there was great anticipation after shooting wrapped. ?This camera and lens really held its own against the ?big guns of 35mm or 2/3-inch Sony F900s that have pretty much owned prime time, explained Eldred, ?Theres this old perception that half-inch lenses and imagers are geared more for corporate or industrial applications. That was the old days. The success of this high-end project proved that to be completely erroneous.
