Fuji To Ship Three FinePix Cameras

S2 model tops out at 12.1 megapixels By Dave Nagel
Fujiflm has released three new cameras in its FinePix line using the company's new 3.11 megapixel Super CCD systems. The new models include the S2, the F601 and the F602, each of which offers different resolutions and features, including ISO sensitivity up to 1600 and image recording resolutions of 12.1 megapixels.

Fujifilm's new FinePix S2's Super CCD sensor system offers 6 million effective pixels and can record up to 12.1 million pixels. The FinePix S2 Pro also features a CCD Raw mode, which delivers the image before it has been processed by the camera's internal algorithmic settings. Other features include:

  • Dual-Storage Media Option, which includes SmartMedia and IBM's Microdrive, which can be inserted into the camera's CompactFlash (Card Type II) slot.
  • Dual interface offers both USB 1.1 and FireWire for transfering images from the camera.
  • 30-second voice notes to each photo.
  • Adjustable ISO equivalents of 100/160/200/400/800/1600.

Fujifilm's FinePix S2 Pro will be available in the second half of 2002.


The FinePix F601 is targeted more toward consumers, offering multimedia capabilities and point and shoot operation. The FinePix F601 Zoom can deliver 2,832 x 2,128 (6.03 million) recorded pixels and includes a Super EBC Fujinon 3x optical zoom (with up to 4.4x digital zoom). Other features include:

  • The FinePix F601 Zoom can capture AVI digital video with sound at full VGA (640 x 480) and QVGA (320 x 240) resolutions at 15 frames per second. It also can record up to 33 minutes of audio on a 16 MB SmartMedia card and up to nine hours using a 128 MB card.
  • 30-second voice notes to each photo.
  • Shutter speeds ranging from three seconds to 1/2000 of a second with adjustable ISO sensitivity of 160/200/400.
  • Continuous shooting at the one megapixel (maximum 1.8 frames/sec up to 40 images at 1,280 x 960) and six megapixel (maximum five frames/sec up to four images) modes.
    • The F601 will be available in March.

      The FinePix S602 Zoom delivers images up to 2,832 x 2,128 (6.03 million) recorded pixels. It has a 6x optical zoom lens, an SLR-type body design and fully manual photographic controls. Other features include:

      • Dual auto-focus system.
      • Dual-storage media option including SmartMedia and IBM's Microdrive.
      • The FinePix S602 Zoom offers VGA-level digital video recording at quick rate of 30 frames per second.
      • 30-second voice notes for each photo.
      • Shutter speeds ranging from three seconds to 1/2000 of a second in auto mode and 15 to 1/1000 of a second in manual mode.

      The F602 will be available in June.
