Front Porch Digital Intros The BitStorm Broadcast Quality Real-Time

(September 17, 2001)
Front Porch Digital, Inc. announced the immediate availability of BitStorm: an enterprise-class, software-based, broadcast quality encoding solution that enables users to capture and convert analog or digital content to high-quality compressed data formats in real time for efficient, cost-effective editing, indexing, storage, and distribution.

Front Porch Digital made the announcement at IBC2001 -- the International Broadcasting Convention -- currently underway in Amsterdam.

BitStorm incorporates a powerful, scalable software-based architecture that maximizes conversion speed while reducing the processing required for the conversion of content from multiple analog and/or digital video sources to high-resolution quality digital formats. BitStorm may be used as a standalone system, or integrated with powerful video indexing and search engines and Front Porch Digital's BitScream transcoder suite as part of a larger end-to-end system for the archiving and real-time, on-demand distribution of digital content. BitScream's unique toolset allows users to transcode content stored in broadcast quality MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 formats, as well as Front Porch Digital's BitStorm Intermediate Archive Format (IAF) (an optimized form of MPEG-2), to multiple end user formats without the need to recapture content from the source material. In addition, the solution lowers economic and physical barriers to digital conversion, and avoids the costs of ongoing production and storing data in multiple formats and bitrates.

Other key features and advantages include:

  • BitStorm can perform real-time, on-demand encoding of content directly from live camera or satellite feeds, as well as from standard video decks with frame accurate capture. BitStorm is also capable of encoding in on-line and off-line modes.

  • The software-based architecture allows for flexibility, batch
processing, and automation templates. This enables process automation, ensuring a seamless, controlled workflow among archive subsystems for bulk video archiving.

  • Users can easily reconfigure process flows, dynamically change parameters, and apply new formats much faster than existing hardware- and software-based solutions.

  • BitStorm is easily integrated into existing production workflows, or with other Front Porch Digital rich media components with an extensible architecture that also makes it amenable to third-party component integration.

  • BitStorm is easily installed and used on Windows NT and 2000 workstations. BitStorm not only supports individual workstations with multiple processors, but also configurations that provide multi-threaded parallel processing and batch processing for improved production workflows.
